Transport minister Kailash Gahlot on Wednesday flagged off 80 new CNG-run AC buses under the Cluster Scheme, taking the total number of buses in Delhi’s public transport fleet to an all-time high of 7,081.
“Congratulations to the people of Delhi. 80 low-floor AC buses were added to the fleet of public buses today. We are continuously strengthening the bus network of Delhi. We will fulfill all the promises made to the people of Delhi,” chief minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted.
“We had already crossed the mark of 7,000 buses recently. With the induction of these 80 buses, the number of buses has now reached an all-time high of 7,081. These buses are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including safety features for women passengers,” Gahlot told reporters after flagging off the buses from the Rajghat bus depot, where chief secretary Vijay Kumar Dev and other senior transport department officials were also present.
“We are keen towards providing Delhiites a world-class public transport system,” Gahlot said, adding that the Kejriwal government is committed to make Delhi’s public transport service strong and accessible.
The Delhi government said in a statement that the newly inducted 80 AC buses are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including a foldable ramp for differently-abled, CCTV cameras and panic buttons for safety of women commuters, live video streaming in case of emergency, and GPS units for live tracking of the bus.
Cluster Scheme buses are operated on 328 routes in the city and the additional 80 buses will be deployed on nine additional cluster routes from the Ghumanhera Depot 1 and 2, the government stated.
The nine routes on which these buses will operate are—Kamaruddin Nagar
Terminal to Sarai Kale Khan, B Block Mangolpuri to Old Delhi Railway Station, Syed Nangloi Old Delhi to Railway Station, Mehrauli to Mayur Vihar Phase-3, Tikri Border to Delhi Secretariat, West Enclave to Shivaji Stadium, Dhaula Kuan to Bhati Mines, Mangolpuri B Block to R Block New Rajinder Nagar, and Mangolpuri Q Block to Safdarjung Terminal.
